A Dilemma in Musical Direction

Deciding to join at 5.35 pm the day before. Waking up at 5.45 am. 13 hour queues. Tremendous support from my girlfriend. One bandmate to kill time with. Cramming revision while wating. 20 minutes of thankful air-conditioned waiting. Barely 5 minutes of singing in total.

This summed up my bid to join Singapore Idol 2, which thankfully paid off as I progressed to the second round of auditions. Hopefully I will impress in the judges as I did to the producers during the next round.

Problem is, I have no idea how to market myself, or of what songs I should sing at the 2nd round of auditions. The fundamental problem lies in my image. My passion lies in singing jazz, but should I sell jazz when I am a rocker at heart? Should I present myself as a rocker, or as a crooner?

I'll be thankful if any of you dear friends who are reading this blog could suggest an idea or two for my Idol image and for potential songs that I can sing (and impress, which are mainstream and catchy) for the 2nd round of auditions with the judges.

I'll have to sing the same song for the 2nd round of auditions, which would be Frank Sinatra/Michael Buble's "Come Fly With Me" and two other songs. Suggestions?

On another hand, I am learning alot about marketing from Singapore Idol, on positioning, branding, building brand excitement, hype and sensation creation, just from pure observation alone. This truly is an eye-opening insight into the entertainment industry, despite my being only in the infant stages of the competition.
